Climbing Career

Learning The Ropes & Competition

Robyn Erbesfield-Raboutou was introduced to climbing by her high school boyfriend when she was 17 years old. It wasn’t until she surprised herself (and her friends) on a 5a (5.7) that she realized she should probably start taking climbing seriously.

In 1989 she was asked if she wanted to take part in the first World Cup in Leeds. She went on to win the first-ever World Cup and went from being an unknown rookie to gaining sponsorships and traveling around the world competing in World Cups.

She went on to win four consecutive World Cupcs between 1992 and 1995 and one World Championship. She also won Rock Master in 1994. She met her husband, Didier Raboutou in a climbing competition in Paris and together they have two children, Brooke and Shawn Raboutou who are both accomplished rock climbers.

ABC Climbing

Robyn isn’t just the mother of two of the most accomplished climbers in the world, she is also an entrepreneur and coach, having established ABC Kids Climbing Gym in Boulder, Colorado. The gym is dedicated to training the next generation of climbers, with a focus on creating a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for kids of all ages and skill levels to explore their love for climbing.

She has worked with several competition climbers, including Megan Mascarenas, Margo Hayes, Colin Duffy and her own daughter and son Brooke Raboutou. In fact, Margo Hayes made history in 2017 by becoming the first woman to climb a 5.15a (9a+) graded sport climbing route. Did ABC help her get to that level? It certainly did!

Notable Ascents

Robyn’s list of achievements is impressive, including being the third woman in history to climb a 8b+ (5.14a), Silence Vertical in France in 1993. She has also bagged another five 8b+ and became the oldest American women to climb an 8c (5.14b) at the age of 49. Robyn was the first woman to onsight an 8a+ (5.13c) in 1993 as well as an 8a (5.13b).

She is also an avid boulderer, having climbed a V12 while also making an appearance on Shawn’s YouTube channel, Mellow, to climb Element of Surprise (V11).

Angel

Meet Angel, a former desk-jockey turned global wanderer. After catching a severe case of the climbing (and travel) bug, she's now a world traveller, living the dirtbag dream. Highballs? Too mainstream for her taste. She's all about the thrills of lowballs, where the real action happens. Nowadays, you'll find her in Thailand, either precariously balanced on a granite slab or trading stories with Nemo and his buddies underwater!
