Climbing Career
Learning the Ropes
Natalia fell in love with the sport at the age of 4 after she passed by her local climbing gym. However, for little Natalia, it wasn’t quite time for her to hit the gym. There was an age restriction which meant she had to wait another two years before she could join.
Eager to get on the wall, at the age of 6 Natalia finally joined Pacific Edge (where Chris Sharma learned to climb), and climbed once a week. That quickly increased to more than a few times a week and was even asked to join the gym’s team.
When Natalia turned 15, she moved to Boulder, Colorado so she could join ABC Climbing. Having seen the ABC team always winning the national championships, she knew that that was the level she wanted to be at.
She convinced her parents and they moved one summer to Colorado. There she was coached by professional climber Robyn Eberfield-Raboutou. She became part of the young elite team alongside Brooke Raboutou and Margo Hayes.
She didn’t have any plans on becoming a professional climber. She just wanted to become the best climber she could be. After seeing her potential, she realized she wanted to do this as a career.
Competition Climbing
Natalia is a fierce competitor who has dominated the climbing scene in recent years. In 2019, she proved to be unbeatable in the bouldering National Cup Series, winning every event and securing the top spot in the USA Climbing 2020 Bouldering Open National Championship.
That same year, Grossman competed in the Boulder World Cup in Vail, Colorado, where she made it to the semifinals and finished in seventh place, just one spot shy of making it to the final round. But Grossman didn’t let that setback hold her back.
In March 2021, Grossman showed the world what she was made of at the USA Climbing National Team Trials, where she finished first in bouldering and second in lead, earning her a spot on the United States national team for both disciplines. And she didn’t stop there.
At the opening Boulder World Cup of the April 2021 IFSC Climbing World Cup season in Meiringen, Grossman made it to the final round and took home the bronze medal. And in May of the same year, she had two amazing performances at IFSC events held in Salt Lake City. Grossman won her first two World Cup gold medals, topping all four boulders in the first event, and flashing all four final boulders in the second event, beating the incredible Janja Garnbret in the process. This made Grossman the first woman to beat Garnbret in a Boulder World Cup since 2018!
But Grossman’s talents don’t just lie in bouldering. In the lead discipline, she has consistently finished on the podium, winning two silver and two bronze medals throughout the season and securing second place overall.
She has continued to awe spectators with her performance at this year’s 2023 World Cups and Championships, so far taking home two gold medals and one silver.
UPDATE: Natalia has secured herself an Olympic ticket after taking gold at the PanAm qualifiers in October.
Education
Many professional climbers choose to just focus on climbing. Not Natalia. She decided to enroll in university to study Psychology and Business. When she’s not climbing, she’s studying, and when she’s not studying she’s climbing.
Her hard work paid off as she graduated early with honors in 2022!
Notable Ascents
When the pandemic hit in 2020 and international competitions were put on hold, Natalia Grossman didn’t let that slow her down. Instead, she took advantage of the break to explore the great outdoors and push herself on some seriously tough climbs.
One of her most impressive achievements during this time was sending four V13 boulders in Rocky Mountain National Park. That’s some serious strength and technique on display! And if that wasn’t enough, Grossman also tackled the nearby 5.14b (8c) sport route Positive Vibrations in Clear Creek Canyon, pulling off an impressive redpoint ascent.
